Manceri Named to VaSID Men's Golf All-State College Division Team

ASHLAND, Va. – It's a year of firsts for the annual Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Men's Golf All-State College Division Awards, which were announced by the organization Wednesday afternoon.

First-year player Elias Haavisto of Averett University swept the two major awards allotted for players: Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. It's the first time one player has collected both accolades since the College Division began its own honor roll in 2013.

On top of that, Hampden-Sydney College head coach Chad Eisele became the first to repeat as the Coach of the Year, as he yet again earned the top spot amongst his peers after directing the Tigers to a fifth-place finish nationally.

Haavisto, a freshman native of Kotka, Finland, finished his debut season as the third-ranked player in the nation in Division III. He was named the to the 2020 Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) PING All-America First Team. The GCAA also honored him with the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award from a pool of talented first-year players from across the country. The award was paired with a selection to the national All-Freshman team.

Haavisto was named the USA South Conference Rookie of the Week in all five weeks that he was eligible and grabbed one Co-Golfer of the Week nod as well. Averett named him the Dr. Tommy Foster Male Student-Athlete of the Year as well as the Spring Freshman Male Athlete of the Year. In his five events, he never finished lower than 10th and tallied two individual wins.

Eisele just finished his third season as H-SC's head coach. In his tenure, Eisele has helped Hampden-Sydney grow into a top program in the region and the nation. The Peoria, Illinois native claimed the Jack Jensen Coach of the Year honor from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) for the second straight year.

After finishing in the Top 15 last season, Eisele directed the Tigers to a fifth-place ranking in the 2020 Bushnell Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll and sixth in the final Golfstat Division III Top 25 in 2019-2020. Hampden-Sydney averaged 289.44 strokes-per-round, which was fourth-best in Division III this year. H-SC was the best team in Division III for first round scoring, averaging 73.37 stroke-per-first-round as well. In six tournaments this year, H-SC finished in the Top 10 in each one, including winning the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational and finishing in the Top 5 two other times. Eisele balances his time as the Tigers' golf coach by serving as the College's Director of Athletics as well.

Four of Eisele's players landed on this year's VaSID All-State rolls. Sophomores John Hatcher Ferguson and Hunter Martin join Haavisto on the All-State First Team. Seniors Bruce Shober and Adam Hade were honored with All-State Second Team selections.

Rounding out the first team alongside Haavisto, Martin and Ferguson were Washington & Lee's Brain Peccie and Christopher Newport's Alex Price. Peccie, a senior from Norfolk, Va., is a two-time VaSID Player of the Year and has appeared on the All-State First Team three times. Peccie leaves his career at W&L with a national championship under his belt as well, earning the top spot as a sophomore. Price, a freshman from Hillsboro, Va., earned Honorable Mention All-American accolades and joined Haavisto on the GCAA National All-Freshman team. Ferguson, a sophomore from Rocky Mount, Va., was named last year's VaSID Rookie of the Year and is ranked as the 47th best player in Division III while also claiming All-American Honorable Mention honors. Martin, a sophomore from Gloucester Point, Va. landed on the 2020 Division III PING All-American Second Team and was an All-ODAC First Team selection.

On the second team alongside Shober and Hade were Ferrum's Lance Keiser, Mary Washington's Phillip Manceri and Christopher Newport's Kevin Quinto. Keiser, a senior from Manassas, Va., is an All-ODAC First Team performer and holds 18-hole, 36-hole and 54-hole individual scoring records at Ferrum. Manceri, a senior from Boca Raton, Florida, led the Eagles with a 73.83 scoring average this season and never shot above a 75. Quinto, a junior from Pittsfield, Mass., earned Honorable Mention All-American status and carded no more than a 77 in three tournaments. Shober, a senior from Appomattox, Va., earned All-ODAC Second Team accolades and ranked 88th in all of Division III. Hade, a senior from Richmond, Va., ranked 57th across Division III players and was named to the All-ODAC First Team.

VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
