UMW Field Hockey Falls at #17 CNU, 6-2, in C2C Semifinal

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 6-2 decision at 17th ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday evening in Newport News, Va. The Eagles close the season with a mark of 5-13.

Christopher Newport jumped on top early, scoring at 1:14, and added anoth tally at 5:18 to take a 2-0 lead through the first quarter. In the second, the Eagles cut the deficit in half, as senior Caperton Bierne scored on an assist from fellow senior Sydney Keating at 16:32. The Captains added a score in the waning minutes of the second period to hold a 3-1 lead at halftime.

CNU opened the third quarter with two more scores, but the Eagles gained momentum with another score, this time from Keating at 42:38. The hosts added one score in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Christopher Newport led in shots, 38-11, as well as penalty corners, 11-4. UMW junior goalkeeper Bailey McNabb made 15 saves on the day.
