In a game that saw each team score in the opening and closing minutes of regulation and a pair of extra periods, the University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision at St. Mary's College of MD on Wednesday evening in St. Mary's City, Md. The Eagles slip to 3-3 on the season.
The host Seahawks scored just 1:07 into the game, but the Eagles scored just 10 seconds later, as freshman Monique Lipton scored unassisted. The game remained tied at 1-1 throughout the rest of the first, second, and third periods.
Then, with 5:05 remaining, the Eagles went ahead on a penalty stroke by senior Sydney Keating. The Seahawks tied the score with 1:04 left in regulation, sending the game to overtime. After one scoreless overtime, the Seahawks found the game winner at 73:11.
St. Mary's led in shots, 26-7, and penalty corners, 9-6. UMW goalie Bailey McNabb made 10 saves on the day, a new career high.
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Washington & Lee University at 1:00 p.m.
