Bernard's Big Day Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past Roanoke, 6-3

Junior Emma Bernard scored a career-high four goals and added one assist to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Roanoke College on Thursday afternoon at the Battleground in both teams' season opener.

Bernard started the scoring swiftly, caging her first goal at 3:51 on a Paige Stewart penalty corner. In the second quarter, Bernard took a rebound off the Roanoke keeper's pads for her second tally, and UMW held a 2-0 advantage at halftime. 

The Eagles doubled their advantage in the third quarter, as Stewart scored off a saved shot at 36:30, and Bella Schroder scored on a Bernard assist at 44:02. In the fourth, Roanoke rallied for the first two goals, but Bernard answered at 54:55 on a Stewart pass, and, after another Maroons score, capped the scoring with her fourth of the day at 58:15 on an unassisted score through traffic.

Roanoke held a 19-17 lead in shots, as well as a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb made eight saves in gaining her first win.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater College at 4:30 p.m.
