Sophomore forward Emma Bernard (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) scored a pair of goals, and classmate Riley Tengwall (Grasonville, Md. / Kent County) added a goal and an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Rhodes College on Sunday in a neutral site game played in Newport News, Va. The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the season.
UMW wasted little time in opening the scoring, as Bernard scored on a Tengwall assist with 2:23 elapsed into the game. In the second quarter, Tengwall scored on a Maggie Ellis (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) assist at 20:16, and Bernard added her second of the day at 23:14 unassisted to provide the Eagles with a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, sophomore Mary Vaughan (Gloucester, Va. / Gloucester) capped the scoring at 40:50 with her second tally of the season.
Rhodes carried a 19-15 advantage in shots, as well as a 15-9 lead in penalty corners. The Eagles' defense shone brightly on the day, limiting Rhodes to just five shots on frame - all of which were saved by UMW junior goalie Chloe Billy (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin), who gained the shutout.
Mary Washington will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference foe Christopher Newport University at 4:00 p.m.
