The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting York College of Pa. on Saturday at Homecoming. The Eagles slip to 5-9 overall, and 0-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The Spartans scored once in each period, jumping out to a 1-0 lead at 6:39, and adding another in the second at 26:30. The Eagles cut the deficit in half at the 33:05 mark, as senior Lauren Hopkins scored her 14th goal of the season unassisted. The Spartans answered with the next goal to lead, 3-1, after three quarters.
Sophomore Jess Smith scored for the Eagles with 4:06 remaining to again cut the deficit to one, but York added an insurance score with 1:30 left to cap the scoring.
The Spartans led in shots, 20-6, as well as in penalty corners, 13-2. UMW sophomore goalie Jillian Lawrence made 12 saves between the pipes.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Salisbury University at 4:00 p.m. in another CAC matchup.
