UMW Field Hockey Falls at Va. Wesleyan on Friday Night, 4-3

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision at Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday night in Virginia Beach. The Eagles slip to 2-6 on the season.

The Eagles gained the lead five minutes into play, as junior Izzy Scholz scored on an assist from senior Lexie Dixson. The Marlins tied the score five minutes later, but UMW regained the lead on a score from senior Lauren Hopkins. VWU again tied the score at 2-2 in the final minute of the quarter.

In the second quarter, UMW regained the lead with 3:27 remaining before halftime as Scholz scored again, on a pass from junior Jackie Smith. The Eagles held the lead through halftime.

The third quarter saw the Marlins score to tie the score, and the hosts took the lead with 13:32 remaining in regulation and held on for the win.

The Eagles led in shots, 11-9, while the Marlins led in penalty corners, 8-4. UMW sophomore goalie Jillian Lawrence made five saves on the night in goal.

UMW will return to action on Sunday, when they face Rhodes College in Newport News, Va. at 11 a.m.
