MacCartney's Goal in Waning Seconds Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past Bridgewater

Junior midfielder Morgan MacCartney scored the game-winning goal with just 8.1 seconds remaining in regulation as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team overcame a pair of deficits to defeat Bridgewater College, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season.

Bridgewater opened the scoring at 7:56 of the first quarter, on a score from Jacqueline DeFulvio, but UMW answered just 20 seconds later to knot the score, on a tally from junior Bella Urcia. The visitors scored with 1:11 to play before halftime, from Georgia Howard, and carried the lead through halftime and the third quarter.

Urcia scored again with 1:11 elapsed in the fourth, taking a rebound off the keeper from a crossed ball, to tie the score at 2-2. UMW gained a penalty corner with 1:26 left, and held possession for the final seconds, leading to a cross from senior Lexie Dixson to MacCartney, who was positioned at the far post to knock home the winning shot.

Mary Washington led in shots, 19-8, while both teams registered five penalty corners. UMW goalkeeper Jillian Lawrence made four saves, while Bridgewater's Ali Bishop had 11 stops for the guests.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Franklin & Marshall College at 1:00 p.m.
