Urcia's OT Winner Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past DePauw, 3-2, in Home Opener

Junior Bella Urcia scored the game-winning goal 1:12 into overtime to propel the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over DePauw University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in the Eagles' home opener. UMW evens its season record at 1-1.

After a scoreless first quarter, DePauw reached the scoreboard first, as Cathy Zesiger scored unassisted 1:14 into the second frame. Seven minutes later, sophomore Emma Claire Stewart scored her second goal of the season to knot the score, and the score stood at 1-1 at halftime.

Again, both offenses stalled in the third quarter, but UMW opened the fourth quarter by grabbing the lead on a goal from junior Izzy Scholz with an assist to Morgan MacCartney. DePauw answered quickly, tying the score at 2-2 less than two minutes later on a goal from Alexa Steil. The score stood tied through regulation.

In overtime, Urcia provided the game winner 1:12 into play, off a rebound of a stopped shot.

The Eagles led in shots, 23-8, and in penalty corners, 10-6. Sophomore Jillian Lawrence made three stops in gaining the win for the Eagles, while Allie Duranceau had 12 saves for DePauw.

UMW will return to action on Tuesday when the Eagles host Bridgewater College at 4:00 p.m.
