UMW Field Hockey Falls, 2-1, to Johns Hopkins in Season Opener

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team opened up the 2019 season at Johns Hopkins University, and fell to the 5th ranked host 2-1.

Johns Hopkins started off on the offensive front but sophomore goalie Jillian Lawrence was able to hold the Blue Jays off making 3 saves in the first period.

The Blue Jays hopped on the board early in the second period when Izzy Thompson slipped one in 3:46 into the period. The rest of the second period was back and forth between the Eagles and Blue Jays with neither team able to capitalize.

In the third period the Eagles responded when sophomore Sydney Keating drove from the top of the circle and sophomore Emma Claire Stewart deflected the ball past the Blue Jays goalie near the right post with 12:47 to play. The tie wouldn't last as Izzy Thompson responded 2 minutes later to give the lead back to the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays led in shots, 35-5, as well as corners, 10-2. The Eagles defense made multiple saves with Lawrence making 13 saves and senior Meredith LeBel and junior Jackie Smith each making a defensive save.

The Eagles will return to action at home on September 7th to take on DePauw at 12:00 pm.
