UMW Field Hockey Falls in CAC Semifinals at CNU, 1-0

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision at fifth-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Eagles close with a record of 11-8 on the season.

The defenses proved strong in the first half, as the two teams combined to put just three shots on goal, as the bulk of play took place in the middle of the field. After neither team could find the cage in the first half, Christopher Newport gained a penalty corner with just under 12 minutes remaining. in regulation. The Captains capitalized, as Courtney Feist scored on a Jackie Kotoriy assist in capturing the game's lone goal. Kotoriy fired from the top of the circle, with Feist there to redirect into goal.

The Eagles mounted a late charge, but were unable to draw a corner, as several shots were sent wide.

Christopher Newport led in shots, 10-6, and in corners, 6-1. UMW junior goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made six saves, while CNU's Stephanie McKinney made four.

The top seeded Captains will host the CAC title match on Saturday.
