Hopkins Leads UMW Field Hockey Past St. Mary's, 7-1, in CAC Tourney First Round

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Hopkins scored three goals and added an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-1 victory over St. Mary's College of Md. on Sunday at a rainy Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference Tournament first round action. The Eagles improve to 11-7 on the season.

The Eagles started swiftly, scoring two goals in the game's first 3:10. Sophomore Lexie Dixson scored at 2:29 unassisted, and then assisted Hopkins for her first tally at 3:10. Junior Alaina Shivers added to the lead at 25:11 on a Hopkins assist, and UMW carried the 3-0 advantage to halftime.

In the second, freshman Morgan MacCartney scored on a penalty corner, with assists going to Noor Varjabedian and Allegra Massey-Elim at 38:59. St. Mary's found the cage at 50:08, as Hannah Deitrich scored on a pass from Sydney Cline, but the Eagles answered back at 51:38, as Hopkins scored on an Erin Kaila assist. Hopkins added her third of the day at 54:18, and Massey-Elim capped the scoring at 63:16 unassisted.

Mary Washington led in shots, 26-10, as well as penalty corners, 13-6. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt had four saves in 62 minutes, with sophomore Ivy Hollander providing eight minutes of scoreless relief. St. Mary's' Alyssa Thompson had eight saves.

The Eagles will move on to face Christopher Newport University on Wednesday in the CAC semifinal round. Game time has yet to be announced. CNU defeated the Eagles, 4-3, in their regular season matchup.
