Massey-Elim, Kaila Lead #17 UMW Field Hockey Past Lynchburg, 6-0, on Saturday

Senior midfielder Allegra Massey-Elim scored a pair of goals, and classmate Erin Kaila added a goal and two assists to lead the seventeenth ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team ran its winning streak to five with a 6-0 victory at Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg. The Eagles improve to 5-1 on the season.

UMW jumped ahead with just 2:32 elapsed into the game, as sophomore Lauren Hopkins scored on a breakaway. The Eagles added an insurance score at 11:43, as sophomore Lexie Dixson scored from inside the circle unassisted. The Eagles maintained the 2-0 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles found the cage at 45:47 on Massey-Elim's first of the day. Massey-Elim controlled a pass from Noor Varjabedian on a penalty corner for the score. Massey-Elim added another less than seven minutes later on another corner to build the Eagles' lead to 4-0.

Freshman Izzy Scholz scored on a Kaila assist at 65:25, and Kaila capped the scoring in the final minute on a penalty corner.

Mary Washington led in shots, 19-9, as well as in penalty corners, 10-6. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made five saves for the Eagles, while Hannah Chapman had five saves and Laurel Nicks four for the Hornets. 

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday night when they visit Washington & Lee University for a 7 p.m. start.
