UMW Field Hockey Blanks Bridgewater, 4-0, on Rainy Wednesday

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Hopkins scored one goal and assisted on two others to propel the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Bridgewater College on Wednesday at the rainy Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season.

After a slow start for both offenses, UMW gained a bit of momentum heading to halftime, as Morgan LaRowe scored on a Hopkins assist with just 11 seconds remaining in the first half.

In the second, UMW erupted for three scores. Freshman Bella Urcia scored unassisted at 48:52 to up the advantage, and freshman Izzy Scholz scored her third goal of the season on a Hopkins assist at 63:37. Hopkins capped the scoring at 66:38 on an assist from freshman Jackie Smith.

UMW led in shots, 13-5, and Bridgewater held a 3-2 edge in penalty corners. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made a pair of saves and Smith added a defensive save, while Bridgewater's Alli Bishop had six saves.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they visit eighth ranked Franklin and Marshall College at 1:00 p.m.
