#14 UMW Field Hockey Tops Rochester, 2-1, on Sunday at Spooky Nook Sports Complex

Seniors Kathleen Namey and Jenna Steele scored first half goals three minutes apart to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Rochester on Sunday at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Pennsylvania. Both teams move to 5-2 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring midway through the first half, as Kathleen Namey scored on a Carlee Budd assist. UMW kept the pressure alive, scoring three minutes later, as senior Jenna Steele scored on a penalty stroke on what would prove to be the winning goal.

With a 2-0 halftime advantage, the Eagles quickly saw their lead cut in half, as Rochester scored in the opening minutes of the second half on a tally by Michelle Relin. But neither team would find any more offense, giving UMW the one-goal win.

The Eagles led in shots, 18-17, and Rochester led in penalty corners, 11-10. Freshman Jessica Cavolt had eight saves for UMW, while Tara Lamberti had 11 stops for Rochester.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host Virginia Wesleyan College at 4:00 p.m. for Alzheimer's Awareness Day.
