George, Jones Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Rhodes, 5-2

Junior midfielder Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) and senior forward Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) each scored two goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-2 win over Rhodes College on Sunday at UMW. The Eagles, who improve to 4-0 on the season, also received a goal and an assist from sophomore Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean).

George opened the scoring with 28 minutes remaining in the first half unassisted, and propelled UMW to a 3-0 halftime advantage after goals from Jones with 14 minutes remaining and another from George with seven minutes left.

Rhodes got on the scoreboard 13 minutes into the second half, but Jones answered less than four minutes later to return the margin to three, and Baker added her score less than four minutes after that to run the score to 5-1. The Lynx scored a late goal to cut the final to 5-2.

The Eagles led in shots, 21-15, with Rhodes holding a 10-7 advantage in corners, Junior Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had a career-high 11 saves for the Eagles, who will visit Roanoke College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
