UMW Baseball Drops Saturday Doubleheader to Christopher Newport

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a Saturday doubleheader to Christopher Newport University on Saturday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium, 9-2 and 15-2. The Eagles slip to 14-13 on the season.

In the opener, the game remained tight throughout until the Captains erupted for seven runs in the ninth. After CNU scored once in the second, the Eagles tied the score in the third, as Bobby Ayscue tripled with one out and scored on a Jonathan Sedmak sacrifice fly. The Eagles fell behind, 2-1, in the fifth, and the game remained at 2-1 until the ninth. The Eagles scored one in the bottom of the ninth, as Xavier Herring singled, moved to second on a hit from Chris Rubano, and scored on a single from Ayscue.

Ayscue had a single, triple, and a walk, and Ty Lowe added two singles and a walk for UMW.

Alex Kobersteen took the loss for UMW, allowing two earned runs on six hits in eight innings. He walked two and struck out 10.

In the second game, CNU scored four in the second, before the Eagles plated one in their half of the inning. Noah Roots singled, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored on a Herring sacrifice fly.

The Captains would score two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth and seventh. UMW got one run back in the eighth, as Ayscue and Owen Reilly singled before Lowe added an RBI single. CNU added four more in the ninth.

Roots had a single and double to lead the Eagle offense.

Lowe took the loss for UMW, as he allowed five earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. He walked six and struck out three.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, when they host Mary Baldwin University in a makeup of a rainout at 3:30 p.m.
