McComber's Complete Game Leads UMW Baseball Past Southern Va., 9-1

Freshman pitcher Brendan McComber allowed just one run on six hits in collecting his first collegiate complete game victory, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 9-1, on Tuesday at V. Earl Dickinson in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 4-12 on the season, and 3-7 in league play.

Both offenses struggled early, as neither team would score a run until the fourth, when the Eagles jumped ahead with a pair. With two outs, Ty Lowe walked and moved to second on a single by David Lambertson. Nick Ciuffreda followed with a two-run double to score both runners.

The Knights scored their lone run in the fifth to cut the margin to 2-1, but the Eagles scored two in the sixth to up the lead to 4-1. Garrett Lyons singled to shortstop and advanced on a wild pitch, before scoring on a Lowe double. Lowe advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a Ciuffreda sacrifice fly.

The Eagles blew the game open with five in the eighth. Jonathan Sedmak and Lyons opened the frame with singles, and Lowe walked to load the bases for Lambertson, who tripled home all three runners. Ciuffreda followed with an RBI ground out. Norman Holcomb then walked, advanced to third on a Nick Bass single, and scored on a fielder's choice from Owen Reilly.

Lambertson singled and tripled, with two runs scored and three RBI, while Lyons added two hits and two runs scored.

McComber went nine innings, scattering six hits and one earned run, with four walks and eight strikeouts, in improving to 2-1 on the season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Randolph-Macon for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
