UMW Baseball Falls to Christopher Newport in 12 Innings, 8-7

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision in 12 innings to visiting Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 3-12 overall, and 2-7 in league play.

After CNU scored one in the first, the Eagles exploded for six runs in their half of the inning. Centerfielder Caleb McAlister singled and moved to second as second baseman Jonathan Sedmak reached on an error. Garrett Lyons followed with a bunt single to load the bases, and freshman third baseman Ty Lowe provided a two-run double. 

After a ground out, senior David Lambertson provided a two-run single. Norman Holcomb singled, and he and Lambertson executed a double steal to plate another run. Bobby Ayscue followed with an RBI ground out to score Holcomb.

The Captains scored two in the second and one in the fifth to draw to within 6-4 before UMW added a run of its own in the fifth. Lyons doubled, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a Nick Ciuffreda ground out.

CNU scored three runs in the eighth to knot the score, but found the eventual winning run with a walk and double in the 12th inning.

McAlister doubled and singled twice to lead the offense, while Lyons and Lowe singled and doubled. Lambertson added two hits and two RBI.

Freshman Caleb Thornhill took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 3.1 innings of relief, with one walk and three strikeouts. Starter Alex Kyte threw seven strong innings, with two earned runs on four hits, with four walks and one strikeout.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Southern Virginia University at 3 p.m. for another C2C contest.
