UMW Baseball Falls at St. Mary's, 7-6, in 12 Innings on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision in 12 innings at St. Mary's College (Md.) on Wednesday afternoon in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in C2C play.

The Eagles jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the first. Jonathan Sedmak started with a one-out single, and moved to third on a double from Ty Lowe. Nick Ciuffreda followed with an RBI single to plate both runners. After a Seahawk run in the first, the Eagles added a run in the third as Sedmak singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball, and home on a wild pitch.

UMW added another in the fifth, as Garrett Lyons singled, stole second, and scored on a Ciuffreda RBI single. The Seahawks drew to within 4-2 in the sixth before the Eagles scored twice in the seventh. Sedmak doubled and scored on a Lowe single. Norman Holcomb moved Lowe to second, and David Lamertson followed with an RBI double.

The Seahawks scored four runs in the seventh to tie the score, and the game remained tied until the 12th inning, when the Seahawks scored on a double and single.

Sedmak led the Eagles with two singles and a double, while Ciffreda added two hits and three RBI. Alex Kyte took the loss, allowing one run on five hits in five innings of relief, with one walk and two strikeouts. Starter Brendan McComber allowed five earned runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings, with four walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host St. Mary's for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
