UMW Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Washington College

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader with Washington College on Sunday afternoon in Chestertown, Md. The Eagles fell in the opener, 7-3, before winning game two, 10-4.

Game one saw the Shoremen jump ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles rallied with singles from Jonathan Sedmak and David Lambertson and walks to Alex Purgason, Andrew Gerhart, and Caleb McAlister knotted the score at 2-2. Washington regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but UMW tied the score once again with a run in the fifth. Nick Ciuffreda doubled and scored on a single from Ty Lowe. The Shoremen would add two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for the 7-3 margin of victory.

Lambertson and Gerhart led the Eagles with two hits apiece. Zach Adams took the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits in 6.1 innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

The second game saw the Eagles jump ahead with a run in the first, as Garrett Lyons walked, stole second and third, and scored on a single from Norman Holcomb. The Eagles lead jumped to 2-0 with a Lyons RBI double in the third, and to 4-0 an RBI single from Luke Guerzon and a run-producing double from Owen Reilly.

After the Shoremen scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, UMW answered with three runs in the fifth. After an error allowed one run to score, Lambertson followed with an RBI groundout, and Sedmak tripled to plate another run. UMW scored three more in the seventh, as two runs scored on an error, and another on a Reilly single.

Lyons and Reilly each had a single and double, while Holcomb added a pair of singles. Brendan McComber gained the win for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings, walking two and striking out five.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when the Eagles host Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
