UMW Baseball Falls at Emory, 8-7, on Friday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington baseball team fell at Emory University, 8-7, on Friday afternoon in Atlanta, GA. The Eagles were down 8-1 going into the eighth inning, when they scored six runs between the last two innings and the comeback fell just short. The Eagles slip to 3-5 on the season.

Emory jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings. UMW got on the board in the fourth inning to put the score at 4-1. Christian Hague got on base with a hit-by-pitch. Norman Holcomb then reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. Canon Davies scored Holcomb on a base hit to right field.

The Eagles of Emory University answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage. Emory added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to go up 8-1. That's when UMW made things interesting.

UMW added two runs in the eighth inning as they mustered up a rally. Garrett Lyons led off with a single and then Jonathan Sedmak singled. Bryce Runey singled home Lyons and then Hague singled to load the bases. Davies walked to bring home Sedmak and score the two runs.

The Eagles made it even more interesting in the ninth inning as they added four runs. Andrew Gerhart reached base on an error and then Lyons singled. Sedmak singled home Gerhart and Runey then singled after him. Hague doubled to left to score Sedmak. Davies continued the rally as he scored Runey. Hague was stranded on third base and the Eagles were unable to get him home to tie the game.

Daniel Osafo threw 4.0 innings giving up five earned runs and striking out two batters. Trey Stover gave up one run in relief and Chase Perrault gave up none.

The Eagles will take on Emory in a doubleheader tomorrow that begins at 11:30 am.
