UMW Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Messiah

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split a doubleheader against Messiah College on Saturday afternoon at Dickson Stadium in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles lost the first game 5-3, before winning the second 6-4. Head Coach Kelly Swiney wins his first game with UMW. The Eagles are now 1-4 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles got on the board first as David Lambertson singled, stole a base, and then Jonathan Sedmak singled him home in the second inning. After Messiah added five straight runs, UMW chipped into the lead and scored two in the fifth inning. Noah Angstadt led off with a single, then Garrett Lyons roped a double to center field to put runners on second and third. Norman Holcomb and Bryce Runey both singled home a run to put the score at 5-3. The Eagles were unable to pull closer from there.

Cole Gabrielle threw a complete game giving up only one earned run and striking out six batters. Lyons and Sedmak both contributed two hits a piece.

UMW got their first win of the season in the second game as they jumped ahead early in the first two innings. Lambertson and Runey both got on base in the first inning. Hague knocked home Lambertson and then Holcomb grounded into a fielders choice to bring home Runey.

In the second inning, the Eagles got some help with a couple of errors from the Falcons. Xavier Herring scored on a sacrifice bunt error from Andrew Gerhart. A sacrifice fly from Runey added another run for UMW. The Eagles took a 5-2 lead in the fourth as Lyons began the inning with a double and then a single from Lambertson scored the fifth run. Messiah added two runs in the fifth to get within one. The Eagles added an insurance run in the sixth on a single from Holcomb to score Lambertson. Messiah threatened in the seventh inning as they had runners on second and third with two outs but Noah Adcock stranded them their to pick up the save as he got them to groundout. 

Daniel Osafo pitched 5.0 innings giving up one earned run and striking out four batters. Lambertson collected three hits to lead the way for UMW.

The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow as they will host McDaniel for a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm.
