UMW Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against York on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split their doubleheader against York College on Saturday afternoon as part of senior day in Fredericksburg, Va. UMW lost the first game 5-4, and then won the second game 9-4. The Eagles are now 19-17-1 overall, and 8-10 in the CAC.

In the first game of the afternoon, UMW took a 2-0 lead as Mark Smith hit a home-run and brought in Stephen Johnston who had reached on a single. York tied the game up in the third inning at 2-2.

The Spartans added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. UMW got a run back in the sixth inning as David Lambertson singled to lead off the inning, Tyler Ray bunted him to second, and then Lambertson scored on a single from Ramsis Ruiz

York scored a fifth run in the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead. In the ninth inning, the Eagles tried to rally to win the game. Smith reached on a single to get it started, and then Nicholas Bass singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. Kevin France singled home Smith and that put the tying run on third base. UMW stranded the runner on third and could not bring him home and they fell 5-4. 

The Eagles recorded 12 hits in the ball game. Joe Thompson threw 7.0 innings, giving up five earned runs, and striking out six batters.

In the second game of the doubleheader, UMW jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the first two innings. Tyler Ray scored the first run of the game in the first inning as he reached on a single, advanced to third on an error by the pitcher, and then Christian Hague drove him home on a sacrifice fly.

France got the inning started in the second inning as he singled, and then Lambertson singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Ray singled home France, and then Hague singled home Lambertson. Johnston came up with two on and delivered a double that brought home both Ray and Hague home. Smith then singled home Johnston to help UMW build a six run lead. York added a run in the fifth inning to get within five, 6-1.

UMW added a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 8-1. Lambertson got an RBI in the fifth inning as he grounded into a fielder's choice and brought home Bass. Johnston added his third RBI as he drove in Ruiz on a sacrifice fly. The Spartans brought home three runs in the seventh inning.

The Eagles added their last run of the day in the seventh inning as Johnston drove in his fourth run of the day. Lambertson led off the inning with an infield single, and then Ray singled to put runners on first and second. Johnston singled to right field to bring home Lambertson and cap the scoring for the day.

Hank Biggs pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one earned, and struck out four batters on his way to a win. Bryant White pitched 1.1 shutout innings and struck out one batter. The UMW bats exploded for 18 base hits on the day.
