Junior shortstop Ramsis Ruiz collected five hits and five runs scored to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 19-7 victory over Southern Vermont College on Monday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 10-6 on the season.
The Eagles jumped ahead with two runs in the first, as Mark Smith led off with a triple, and Ruiz followed with an RBI double. Ruiz advanced on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly. UMW bolted ahead with eight runs in the third on five hits and three errors. Ruiz singled and stole second, before scoring on a single from Kevin France. Nick Bass followed with a single after France advanced on a wild pitch, and France scored on an error by the left fielder on the play. Tyler Ray walked and Garrett Lyons was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Bryce Runey reached on an error to plate one run.
Ray scored on another error, and Runey scored on a Ruiz single. Johnston doubled home a pair of runs to cap the inning. Southern Vermont scored five in the fourth to cut the margin to 10-5.
The Eagles scored a pair in the sixth. France doubled to lead off and scored on an error. After Bass walked, Lyons hit a double to score Bass. In the seventh, UMW scored three times, as Smith singled, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch. Ruiz singled and moved to third on a Johnston double, and scored on a single from Christian Hague. With the bases loaded, Lyons was hit by another pitch to score the third run of the frame.
The Eagles scored four in the eighth as Ruiz and Hague provided RBI singles, and Lyons drove in two with a double.
Ruiz had four singles and a double and drove in three runs, while Bass had three hits. Johnston and Lyons each posted a pair of doubles, and France singled and doubled.
Alex Ford gained the win for the Eagles, allowing one hit in 3.1 innings, with four strikeouts. Mason Riser allowed two earned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings with six strikeouts, and Chris Kenyon allowed two earned runs on two hits in two innings, with four strikeouts.
The Eagles will host the Mountaineers for another single game on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
