UMW Baseball Falls at Averett, 5-4, on Thursday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision at Averett University on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 5-6 on the season.

The Eagles jumped ahead in the second inning on an RBI single from Daniel Ortiz to plate Mark Smith. Averett tied the score with a run in the third.

UMW went back ahead with a run in the seventh, as Christian Hague scored on an RBI groundout from David Slupek. The Cougars scored twice in the seventh to take a 3-2 advantage, but UMW tied the score in the eighth as Nicholas Bass provided an RBI single to score Tyler Ray.

Averett went ahead with two runs in the eighth, and the Eagles cut the deficit to one at 5-4 on the ninth, as Slupek knocked an RBI double to score Ramsis Ruiz.

Hague, Bass, and Mike Flosser each had two hits for the Eagles, while Slupek drove in a pair of runs. Mason Riser pitched 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs, with three walks and four strikeouts. Robert Cross took the loss, allowing two unearned runs in 1.1 innings, with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against St. Joseph's College at Dickinson Stadium.
