The University of Mary Washington baseball team allowed four first inning runs and couldn't recover in a 9-0 loss at 17th ranked Shenandoah University on Tuesday afternoon in Winchester, Va. The Eagles slip to 3-4 on the season.

The Hornets started the scoring in the first, on four unearned runs, on a three-run home run and a bases loaded walk after an error. A two-run double and a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 7-0 after seven innings, and SU would add two in the eighth to move the final to 9-0.

The Eagles were led offensively by senior Mark Smith, who doubled twice, and freshman Tyler Ray, who singled and doubled. Alexander Ford took the loss for the Eagles, allowing four unearned runs on four hits in three innings, with six walks and four strikeouts. Jonathan Truba pitched five innings of relief, allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Messiah College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
