The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Montclair State University at Dickinson Stadium, dropping the opener, 12-6, before taking the second game, 2-1, in walkoff fashion. The Eagles move to 2-3 on the season.

In the opener, the Red Hawks jumped ahead with five runs in the second, but the Eagles answered with six in the third to gain the lead. After Kevin France and Zavier Webb reached on errors, both runners advanced on a sacrifice from Mike Flosser. Ramsis Ruiz followed with a double down the left field line, and Stephen Johnston added an RBI single. After a Christian Hague single, Tyler Ray doubled home both runners, and came around to score on an error.

The Red Hawks hit a pair of home runs in the sixth and added another in the seventh for a 12-6 victory. Johnston led the Eagles with two hits, while Ruiz and Ray produced two-run doubles. Alex Shapiro took the loss, allowing four runs in two innings, with two walks, four strikeouts and three hits allowed.

In the nightcap, sophomore Christian Hague pitched six innings of two-hit baseball, allowing one earned run with three walks and four strikeouts. Montclair State scored one in the third, but the Eagles tied the score with a run in the fourth. Mark Smith doubled and advanced on a ground out. With two outs, Garrett Lyons provided an RBI single to score Smith.

The Eagles gained the win in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Ruiz singled and advanced to second on a balk. After a walk to David Slupek, Johnston singled to center as the winning run scored.

Johnston gained the win on the mound, allowing one hit in one inning of relief. Ruiz led with two hits for the Eagles.

The two teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
