#6 UMW Baseball Upends #2 Christopher Newport in CAC Tournament Elimination Game, 3-1, Behind Biggs' Gem

Sophomore pitcher Hank Biggs threw a complete game three hitter, allowing just one unearned run, to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Christopher Newport University on Thursday morning in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles advance to play on Friday.

In a classic pitcher's duel between Biggs and CNU's Mike Thomas, neither team would score in the first four innings, as Biggs held the Captains to one hit in the first four frames. Christopher Newport went ahead in the fifth on an uneanred run, setting the stage for more UMW late inning magic.

In the top of the sixth, the Eagles drew even, as freshman Christian Hague walked with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and came around to score on a single from sophomore Stephen Johnson.

The Eagles forged ahead in the eighth. Hague singled with one out, and advanced to second on an error on the play. Junior David Slupek followed with an RBI single.

In the ninth, the Eagles added an insurance tally, as Ramsis Ruiz reached on a throwing error and came all the way around to score on another error on the play.

Slupek and Mark Smith each had two hits for the Eagles, who tallied nine in the contest. Biggs allowed just three singles and six walks in nine innings, with seven strikeouts.

The Eagles will next play on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined after Thursday's other tournament contests.
