UMW Baseball Falls at Southern Va., 9-6, in Wednesday CAC Action

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday afternoon in Lexington, Va., after a valiant ninth inning rally that fell just short. The Eagles drop to 14-17 on the season, and 6-10 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Knights scored early, plating five runs in the first inning, keyed by a pair of home runs, and added two more in the fourth inning. The Eagles plated one run in the fifth, as senior Kyle Bynum hit a solo home run, but SVU answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to move ahead, 8-1.

The Eagles scored again in the sixth, as senior Thomas Weaver doubled, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a single from freshman Christian Hague. The Knights scored an unearned run in the seventh, setting the stage for a four run ninth from the Eagles.

Sophomore Stephen Johnston led off with a single, and Bynum notched his second hom run of the game to pull the Eagles to within 9-4. Ramsis Ruiz singled, and with two outs, pinch hitter Tyler Truslow connected for another two-run homer to move the score to 9-6. The Knights were then able to get the final out for the win.

Bynum was 3-4 with two home runs and three RBI for the Eagles, while Weaver, Johnston, and Ruiz each had two hits.

The Eagles will visit Bridgewater College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
