UMW Baseball Drops CAC Contest at St. Mary's on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 20-9 decision at St. Mary's College on Wednesday in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 13-14 overall, and 6-7 in CAC play.

In a crazy, back and forth affair, UMW took the lead with a run in the first, as Brian Burns scored on an infield error. The Seahawks came back with two in the bottom of the first, but UMW tied the score with one in the second, as Kyle Bynum hit a solo home run.

The Seahawks regained the lead with one run in the bottom of the second, before UMW answered back with two runs in the third. Bynum hit a sacrifice fly to score one, and Riley West added an RBI single to score starting pitcher Christian Hague.

After the Seahawks scored three in the third to take a 6-4 lead, UMW answered with three in the top of the fourth. Burns hit a two-run single, and Hague provided an RBI groundout in the inning.

UMW raised its lead to 9-6 in the fifth, as Bryce Runey scored on a wild pitch and Burns delivered a scarifice fly to plate Thomas Weaver. St. Mary's scored three in the fifth to tie the score, and scored in every inning the rest of the way, including a six-run eighth, for th 11-run victory.

Burns, Robert Cross, Weaver, and Ramsis Ruiz all had two hits for UMW as part of a 13-hit attack. The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit York College for a noon doubleheader in conference action.
