UMW Baseball Falls to Apprentice, 5-4, on Tuesday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Newport News Apprentice on Tuesday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles fall to 13-13 on the season.

After Apprentice started the game with a run in the first and one in the second, the Eagles answered with one in the third. Brian Burns hit a one-out double, and freshman Robert Cross followed with an RBI single.

After the Builders added a run in the fourth to up their lead to 3-1, the Eagles scored a pair in the fourth to tie the score. With two out, Riley West doubled to left center field, and advanced to third on a Ramsis Ruiz single. West scored as a pickoff attempt at first on Ruiz was thrown away. After Burns walked, Cross posted an RBI double.

Apprentice scored one in the sixth to regain the lead at 4-3, as Christian Hague led off with a walk, and was balked to second. David Slupek followed with an RBI single to again tie the score. Apprentice found the go ahead run in the ninth with a double and pair of singles, and held on in the ninth for the win.

Cross singled and doubled and drove in two runs for the Eagles, while Burns, Reed Farrier, and West all doubled.

Paul McClure took the loss for UMW, allowing one run in three innings with two walks, three hits, and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will visit St. Mary's College on Wednesday in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
