UMW Baseball Falls at Methodist, 6-4, in 2017 Opener

The University of Mary Washington baseball team overcame a 4-1 deficit to tie the score late, but dropped a 6-4 decision at Methodist University on Friday evening in Fayetteville, N.C.

The Monarchs jumped a head with a pair of runs in the first and one more in the second. With one out in the third, senior Thomas Weaver singled and advanced to third on a single from Stephen Johnston. Senior Kyle Bynum followed with an RBI single to left to draw the Eagles to within 3-1.

After Methodist added a run in the third, UMW cut into the deficit in the fifth. Johnston drew a one out walk, and moved to second on another bynum hit. Freshman Christian Hague followed with a two-run double to right, drawing the Eagles to within 4-3.

UMW tied the score in the seventh, as Brian Burns led off with a walk and moved to second on a Johnston single. After Bynum walked to load the bases, freshman Bryce Runey provided a sacrifice fly to left to tie the score.

The Monarchs plated two runs in the eight and held on in the ninth, as the Eagles loaded the bases before the final out was recorded.

Johnston and Bynum each had a pair of hits for UMW, while Burns and Hague doubled. Junior Cole Jarvis successfully returned from an injury that cost him the 2016 season, pitching 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out seven while walking none.

Sophomore Jonathan Truba started for UMW, allowing three earned runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, with four walks and two strikeouts. Junior Bryant White absorbed the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in the eighth inning, with one walk and one strikeout.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday in Fayetteville when they face Bridgewater College at 5:00 p.m.
