Eagles Sweep Twinbill Against Penn St.-Harrisburg; Move to 8-2, 2-0 CAC

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept the Lions; 13-4 in the opening game, and 5-1 in the nightcap. The Eagles move to 8-2, 2-0 CAC on the year. 

In the opening game, UMW got on the board first in the 2nd with a four spot to jump ahead early. After Connor Finnerty singled to open the inning, James Sink came up and drilled a double to center moving Finnerty to third. Nolan Gilbert singled in Finnerty to give to Eagles a 1-0 lead. Kevin Stein then came up and had an RBI groundout, scoring Sink before Brian Burns singled in Gilbert. 

Burns got on base again in the fourth on a walk. Tyler Truslow singled, moving Burns to third. Jono Haught then singled in Burns to give the Eagles a 5-0 advantage. 

The Lions answered back in the next half inning grabbing runs after an Eagles error allowed John Quinn to reach base. Penn State-Harrisburg got two runs in the inning, but Thomas Weaver answered right back with a home run to deep left to seal the win for the Eagles.

UMW picked up where they left off in the second game, in the bottom of the second with a three spot. A Sink single, followed by a stolen base put a runner in scoring position early. Gilbert then came up and blasted a single, scoring Sink. Stein singled, advancing Gilbert to third, before Burns drove him in with a single to left center. Haught hit a sac fly to allow Stein to score, giving UMW a 3-0 lead.

The Lions scored their lone run of the game in the top of the third, with an RBI single by Jim Murphy that scored Troy Taber. The Eagles would tack on two more runs late to seal the 5-1 win.

UMW returns to action tomorrow, March 9th with a single game against Centenary (N.J.) beginning at 2:00 p.m.
