UMW Baseball Falls to Salisbury, York in CAC Tournament; Garner Third Place

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision at Salisbury University in the opening game, and then fell, 2-0, to York in the day's final game, to get eliminated in the Capital Athletic Conference baseball tournament on Saturday. UMW closes the season with a 22-18 record.

In the Salisbury game, UMW quickly erased a 3-0 first inning defeicit with two runs in the second and four in the third. In the second, Brendan Jones doubled and scored on an error, and James Sink scored on a wild pitch. In the third, Jono Haught hit a two-run homer, and Kevin Stein singled in Cam Kostyack. UMW scored a fourth run when Conner Lilley reached on an error, plating Jones.

The Sea Gulls scored an unearned run in the third to close the gap to 6-4, and tied the game in the fourth with two more unearned runs. The Sea Gulls plated single runs in the seventh and eighth to forge ahead, 8-6, and held the Eagles at bay in the closing innings for the win.

Jones led the Eagles at the plate with a single and two doubles, while Jordan added a pair of hits. The eagles outhit the Gulls, 11-8, but fell victim to a season-high six errors which led to four runs.

Junior Jake Black took the loss, allowing one earned run in four innings on five hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Senior Torey Mancari allowed three earned runs on three hits in four innings with four walks and four strikeouts.

 The second game, against York, proved to be a real pitcher's duel, as the two teams combine dfor just one hit through six innings. The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly and a double, as they gained half of their hits (two) on a pair of doubles in the frame.

UMW was limited to two hits in the game, a double by Haught and a single from Sink. Senior Mike Straub took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in eight innings, with one walk and nine strikeouts.
