Haught Circles Bases in 12th to Lead UMW Baseball to Split with Southern Virginia

Sophomore catcher Jono Haught led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a triple to center field, and scored on an errant throw to third as the University of Mary Washington baseball team won the nightcap of its doubleheader with Southern Virginia University, 6-5, in 12 innings on Saturday. The Knights took the opener, 4-2.

The opener saw the Eagles fall behind, 1-0, in the first on an unearned run. The Knights scored two more in the fourth after a reversed call at first base and an error kept the inning alive, and added a fourth run in the fifth. The Eagle bats finally found life in the seventh, scoring twice as Brendan Jones singled and scored on Seth Jordan's RBI double. Jordan then scored on a Haught single, but UMW could come no closer.

Senior Torey Mancari took the loss, allowing two earned runs in four innings, allowing three hits, walking two, and striking out six. Jordan doubled and walked twice to lead UMW at the plate.

The nightcap saw the Eagles fall behind 4-1 after three innings, but UMW rallied for three in the fourth. T.J. Cretney grounded back to the mound with three runners on, but the throw to third sailed wide, allowing two runs to score. Tyler Roth scored on a Brendna Jones groundout for the third run.

UMW went ahead in the sixth as Cretney doubled and scored on a Jones single. Southern Virginia tied the score in the seventh, and had the bases loaded with one out, but freshman Bernard Mayflower induced a 4-3 double play to keep the score tied.

From there, neither team could push across a run for five innings, until Haught led off the 12th with a shot to the wall in centerfield. The relay throw to third sailed wide, allowing Haught to get up and score the winning run.

Mayflower gained the win for UMW, allowing one run on five hits in six innings of relief. Jordan singled and doubled and Cam Kostyack singled twice for UMW.

The Eagles will visit Galludet University for a 1:00 doubleheader on Sunday.
