UMW Baseball Splits Pair at Stevenson

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader at Stevenson University, falling in the opener, 5-4, before winning the nightcap, 8-4. UMW moves to 5-5-1 on the season.

In game one, the Eagles led, 4-0, into the seventh inning, but the Mustangs rallied for five runs to win the game. Junior Seth Jordan led the Eagles with a single and double, while Connor Wells was 1-2 with two walks, and Brendan Jopnes went 1-3. Mike Straub allowed one earned run on three hits in six innings, with six walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Jake Black allowed one run on two hits in taking the loss in relief.

In the nightcap, senior Shane Sixsmith went 3-4 and senior Matt Abramson pitched a complete game to lift the Eagles to an 8-4 win. Freshman brendan Jones went 2-2 at the plate with two walks, while Jordan went 1-3 with two walks and three RBI. Abramson allowed four runs on four hits, with five walks and six strikeouts.

The two teams will conclude their weekend series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
