University of Mary Washington seniors Justin Carey of the men's soccer team and Jeff Leckrone of men's swimming have been named as the 2018-19 UMW Male Athletes of the Year.
Carey, a first team United Soccer Coaches All-America selection as well as a first team USC Academic All-American, led the men's soccer team to a 14-1-5 record, the Capital Athletic Conference championship, and advancement to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Carey gained first team all-region, all-state, and all-conference honors, and was named as the VaSID State College Division and Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He scored eight goals and added three assists. He became the first 1st team All-American in the program since 1997.
Leckrone gained All-America honors in the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes, becoming the first 1st team All-American in those events in school history. Jeff finished sixth in the nation in the 100 breaststroke, and took fourth in the 200. He picked up seven victories individually and on relays in the CAC Championships, and was subsequently named as the CAC Swimmer of the Year.
This season, he broke three CAC records and four school records, and finished the year undefeated in individual races. He led the Eagles to their 19th straight CAC Championship, and a 25th place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Jeff consistently works above and beyond expectations. This past year and over the last four years he has put in extra work in the pool, and weight room, and sharpened his mental focus."
