UMW Men's Cross Country Places 3rd at Don Cathcart Invite; Women Take 4th

The University of Mary Washington men's cross country team finished in third place and the women's team finished fourth at the Don Cathcart Invitational in Salisbury, Md., on Saturday.

The men finished third among 10 schools with 80 points, and were led by freshman Nicholas Smerlis, who finished in fifth place overall on the 8K course, with a time of 25:51. Junior Jacob Lohr followed in 10th place at 26:11, and sophomore Luke Blair was 21st at 27:14. Sophomore Aidan Kimener placed 31st at 28:08, and freshman Ashton Shultz finished 35th at 28:13.

The women finished in fourth place among 13 schools, with senior Grace Pippin taking top honors for UMW in seventh place, at 23:56.90. Junior Jessica Oberlies finished 12th at 24:19 on the 6K course, while junior Julia Snow was 20th, at 24:59. Sophomore Katherine Armstrong finished in 30th place at 25:48, and senior Amanda Heckman placed 48th at 26:55.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend as Dickinson College hosts a pre-nationals meet in Carlisle, Pa., at the site of the NCAA Championships.
