UMW Men's and Women's Cross Country Open at Richmond Invite

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2023 season on Saturday at the Universiy of Richmond Spider Alumni Invitational. The men finished 12th among 14 mostly Division I opponents, while the women placed 14th among 16 teams.

On the men's side, freshman Nicholas Smerlis was the Eagles' top finisher in 50th place on the 6K course at 19:20, while junior Jacob Lohr finished 72nd at 19:45. Sophomore Luke Blair finished 105th at 20:33. freshman Jimmy Volk was 126th at 21:21. and junior Michael Dye rounded out the top five at 130th at 21:30.

For the women, senior Grace Pippin led the way in 115th place at 16:43 on the 4K course, with junior Jessica Oberlies finishing 124th at 16:59. Sophomore Kaherine Armstrong finished 138h at 17:42, just ahead of teammate Julia Snow, at 17:44. Freshman Eyaya Fletcher took 146th at 18:12.

The teams will be back in action on September 16 at Longwood University at 10:00 a.m.
