Jeff Gibson Named CAC Cross Country Runner of the Week

CAC -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the third races of October. Salisbury sophomore Heather Delaplaine earned CAC Women's Runner of the Week accolades for the third straight week, while Mary Washington senior Jeff Gibson claimed CAC Men's Runner of the Week honors for the second time this season.


WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Heather Delaplaine - Salisbury

Salisbury sophomore Heather Delaplaine helped lead the women's cross country team to a second-place finish at the Hood College Open on Saturday. Delaplaine completed the 6k race fourth overall out of 135 runners with a time of 22:41.4.


MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jeff Gibson - Mary Washington

The Mary Washington men were led at the Rowan University Inter-Regional Rumble by senior Jeff Gibson, who finished 13th overall at 24:36 in the 29-team event.

AROUND THE CAC

The York women's cross country team finished 16th at a loaded Rowan University Inter-Regional Border Battle at Dream Park in Logan Township, New Jersey on Saturday. The women's championship race featured 27 full teams and 224 runners in the biggest individual race the Spartans have participated in during the 2019 regular season. Junior Emma Rogers was York's top finisher as she placed 71st with a time of 23:16.92. Rogers notched an average mile of 6:18.0...Justin Smyth was York's top finisher at the highly competitive Rowan University Inter-Regional Border Battle at Dream Park in Logan Township, New Jersey. The Spartans finished 11th of 29 teams at the event. York totaled 341 points to finish just five points out of a top ten finish. Smyth was York's top finisher as he placed 59th with a time of 25:36.6. He was just under ten seconds from a top 50 finish in the event. Smyth recorded an average mile of 5:09.4. The race featured 256 individual runners in the biggest race the Spartans compete in during the regular season...Salisbury sophomore Ethan Gray helped lead the men's cross country team to a second-place finish at the Hood College Open on Saturday. Gray finished third overall out of 146 runners in the 8k with a time of 26:25.2...Christopher Newport senior Jason Putnam established a new season-best in the 8k after posting a time of 25:26.0 during the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday. Facing a field that included eight teams ranked in the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll, the senior eventually placed 35th overall while helping the Captains finish 19th in the team standings...Jessica Lee posted Christopher Newport's top time at the Connecticut College Invitational after finishing the 6k in 23:01.4. That clocking placed her 66th overall in a field that included nine programs ranked in the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.
