UMW Women's and Men's XC Take Second at UMW Opener

The University of Mary Washington women's and men's cross country teams finished in second place as the Eagles opened the 2018 season by hosting the UMW Opener in Stafford.

On the women's side, the Eagles finished with 33 points, just five behind first-place Christopher Newport, who scored 28. Southern Virginia was third with 82, followed by Marymount with 123, Virginia Union with 145, and Northern Va Community College with 155.

The Eagles were led by junior Emily Knerr, who finished third overall at 15:35.3, followed by freshman Kenzie Lloyd, who took fourth at 15:35.6. Freshman Teresa Guzman was seventh at 16:06, followed by Cameron Delean in ninth at 16:07, and sophomore Ashley Applegate in 10th at 16:08.

For the men, CNU took first with 21 points, followed by UMW with 54 points, Southern Virginia with 61, Marymount 122, and Virginia Union 138.

The Eagles were led by Jeff Gibson, who finished seventh at 15:48, and Matt O'Cadiz, who took ninth at 15:57. J.P. Burklow was 15th at 16:30, and Austin Jones was 17th at 16:42. Laurence Sneed was 19th at 16:59.

Both teams will be back in action on September 14 when they visit the College of William and Mary.
