FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Christopher Newport senior Grayson Reidheadlines the 2017 All-CAC Men's Cross Country team after capturing his third-straight individual title en route to Athlete of the Year honors. The All-CAC squad featured a number of veteran all-stars, with 13 of the 16 honorees earning all-conference honors for at least the second time in their careers.
Reid and the Captains secured their third consecutive team title, guided by first-year head coach Sarah Lagasse, who was honored by her peers as Coach of the Year. Southern Virginia freshman Colter May collected the other major award as Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Knight to claim the honor.
CNU secured nine of the 16 spots on the All-CAC team, including three on the first team. The nine all-conference honorees is the second most in CAC history. The Captains received a CAC-record 10 all-conference awards at the 2016 meet.
Reid concludes his career as one of the most decorated cross country runners in CAC history. He is just the third runner in conference history to capture three individual titles, and just the second to win a trio of Athlete of the Year awards. York's Tim Hartung (2011-13) and Goucher's Jeff Olenick (1997, 1999, 2000) were also three-time champions. Reid was also the CAC Rookie of the Year and a first-team honoree in 2014. He is the only runner in conference history to have won Athlete of the Year three times along with the Rookie of the Year award.
CNU led the All-CAC first team with three top-eight finishers at the championship meet. Joining Reid on the first team were fellow seniors JJ LaPointe and Jeff Dover. Both LaPointe and Dover conclude their CAC careers as four-time All-CAC performers. LaPointe was also a first-teamer in 2016 and 2014, and a second-teamer in 2013. Dover earned first team honors in 2016 after back-to-back second team finishes in 2014 and 2015.
York and Salisbury each placed two on the All-CAC first team. York seniors Alex Smith and Grant Dell capped off their careers by adding yet another all-conference honor. Dell became a four-time All-CAC first team award winner, while Smith secured his third-straight spot in the first team.
For Salisbury, senior Malcolm Milton earned first-team honors for the second time in his career (also in 2015), while sophomore Branson Oduor was an All-CAC performers for the first time.
Mary Washington sophomore Jeff Gibson represented the Eagles on the All-CAC first team.
CNU dominated the All-CAC second team with six honorees - each of whom were repeat award winners. Senior Billy Rabil (1st in '15, 2nd in '14, 2nd in '13) collected his fourth All-CAC nod, senior Daniel Read made his way onto the all-conference squad for the third time (1st in '16, 1st in '15), junior Peyton Artz grabbed second-team honors for the third-straight year, and the trio of senior Sam Murch (1st in '16), sophomore Jason Putnam (1st in '16), and sophomore Cavanaugh McGaw (2nd in '16) secured their second career All-CAC award.
York senior Andy MacGibbon was a second-team recipient for the fourth consecutive season, while Southern Virginia's Colter May nabbed second-team recognition in addition to his Rookie of the Year honor.
