UMW Cross Country Opens With a Pair of 2nd Place Finishes at UMW Opener

WOMEN'S RESULTS

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2017 season with a pair of second place finishes in its home meet in the season opener on Friday evening in Stafford.

On the men's side, UMW (44 points) finished behind Christopher Newport (19 points) and ahead of Marymount (85).

The Eagles were led by sophomore Jeff Gibson, who finished second at 15:08, with junior Kyle Pfohl taking 11th overall at 15:47. Freshman Cameron Wojciesak finished 16th at 16:15, Jake Phillips was 17th at 16:23, and Kevin Jones took 18th at 16:23.

For the women, Christopher Newport finished first at 20 points, followed by UMW with 44 and Southern Virginia with 76.

Freshman Maggie Larkin led the women with a third place finish at 15:10, with freshman Ashley Applegate taking fifth overall at 15:20. Junior Emily Knerr finished 10th at 15:27, sophomore Kristy White placed 13th at 15:35, and freshmen Angelica Gaughran, Anna Balgoyen, and Carly Hughes finished 17-18-19.

The Eagles will return to action on September 8 when they visit Stevenson University for 6:00 pm races.
