UMW Picked Fourth in CAC Women's Cross Country Preseason Poll

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Defending champion York was chosen as the favorite to repeat as champions in the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Preseason Poll. The Spartans received six first-place votes and tallied 76 points to headline the CAC field of 10 squads. 

Christopher Newport, which had its three-year title run snapped last fall, finished second in the poll with 73 points and two first-place votes. The remaining two first-place votes went to Salisbury, which totaled 69 points to claim third in the vote among conference head coaches. 

Mary Washington was fourth in the poll with 58 points, followed by Marymount in fifth with 39 points. Frostburg State (33 points) and Wesley (33 points) were in a deadlock for sixth place, with St. Mary's (32 points) just one point behind in eighth. Southern Virginia (24 points) and Penn State Harrisburg (13 points) rounded out the preseason rankings. 

The 2017 season begins on Friday, Sept. 1. The season will culminate with the CAC Championships hosted by Christopher Newport at Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News, Va. on Saturday, Oct. 28.
