Young Takes Overall Honors as UMW Women Place Fifth at NCAA Cross Country Regional; Men Take Ninth

Sophomore Teagan Young took first place honors as the University of Mary Washington women's cross country team finished in fifth place at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Rome, Ga. The Eagle men finished in ninth place. Senior Lauren Braney finished seventh ovrall, and will join Young at next Saturday's NCAA Championships.

Fresh off a Capital Athletic Conference title in her last race, Young claimed first place at the NCAA Regionals with a time of 21:42.55, nearly eight full seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Braney took seventh at 22:39.89, as both gained all region honors and will compete in next week's national championships. Victoria Parent finished 26th at 23:16.21, Rachel Lewis was 47th at 23:50.38, and Tara Landy was 61st at 24:15.73. Senior Trinity Smyth took 89th at 25:05.75, and Caroline Cerand was 119th at 25:41.11.

The Eagles finished with 142 points in fifth place. Emory was first with 62 points, followed by Christopher Newport in second with 124, Centre with 125, and Rhodes with 137. 29 schools competed overall.

The men saw Ben Sorensen finish 40th at 26:54.24, Julian Menk take 42nd at 26:57.00, Jamie Van Emmerik place 52nd at 27:11.20, Chris Anderson take 63rd at 27:22.58, and Nick Eghtessad place 80th at 27:47.11. James King took 88th place at 27:55.78, and Kevin Jones was 90th at 27:58.28.

The men finished in ninth with 276 points, behind Emory with 62 points, Bridgewater with 65, Cetre with 110, Christopher Newport with 165, Eastern Mennonite with 170, Rhodes with 171, Washington & Lee with 177, and Berry with 271. 28 schools competed in the race. 

Next week's NCAA Division III Championships will take place in Mason, Ohio.
