Eghtessad Leads UMW Men's Cross Country at Paul Short Invite; Many Races Cancelled Due to Heat

On a day where numerous runners were helped off the course due to the overwhelming heat and humidity, the UMW men's cross country team finished in sixth place in the White Race at the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday. The local county emergency center shut down the event due to the large number of casualties both at the races and at other events in the area, prompting several races, including the one the UMW women were to run, to be cancelled.

"In all my years coaching cross country, I've never seen anything like it", said head coach Stan Soper. "It was really unfortunate for everyone, but I've never seen so many runners helped from the courses and taken to ambulances."

Eghtessad braved the conditions to take honors for UMW at 27:41, followed by Julian Menk at 27:45. Chris Markham and Jeff Branson finished at 28:20, followed by Corey Lyons at 28:32.

Both teams will return to action on October 19 when they will compete at Connecticut College at 11:00 a.m.
