2006 University of Mary Washington Men's Cross Country Season in Review

The Eagle harriers opened the season by placing first at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational and then the Roanoke College Invitational. Senior captain Justin
Kirk and junior veterans Luke Wolverton, James Rock, Matt Downs, and Chris Badolato helped lead the way in the early going.

Head Coach Stan Soper's squad participated in the prestigious Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University, where they finished fifth among 25 schools, with Justin
Kirk placing seventh overall. Severeal freshmen, including Frank DeVar and Matt Cash were now providing greater depth. The Eagles duplicated their fifth
place finish at Gettysburg College, despite holding out several runners due to injury.

The Eagles participated in limited numbers the following week at the Elizabethtown College Invitational, with DeVar leading the way with a 17th place finish. After a week off, the Eagles placed second at the Capital Athletic Conference championships, led by Kirk, who was named the CAC Runner of the Year after finishing first overall, and DeVar, who finished second overall and was named as the league's Rookie of the Year. Matt Downs, Matt Cash, George Winslow, and Chris Badolato all gained All-CAC honors for their top 15 finishes.

The Eagles closed the season in team competition at the NCAA South Regional Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, finishing in fourth place among 21 teams with 162 points. Kirk finished sixth overall to secure an invitation to the NCAA Championships, and earned all-region honors, as did DeVar, who placed 13th. Badolato, Cash, and Winslow rounded out the Eagles' top five. Kirk became the first male cross country runner to compete at the NCAA Championships since Jon Gates earned All-America honors for the Eagles back in 1996.
