1998 Mary Washington College Women's Cross Country Season in Review

A combination of speedy veterans and a cast of strong newcomers proved to be a dangerous combination for MWC's competition in 1998, with the women carrying home the Mason-Dixon Invitational and Capital Athletic Conference championships. After an impressive fifth place finish at George Mason, the Eagles suffered through an injury-plagued month of competition. Depth proved to be the Eagles' ally, however, and MWC emerged with a third-place at the Frostburg Invitational and a second at the Virginia State championships before winning the two titles back-to-back at the end of October.

The '98 team consisted of six freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors and a senior, so competition should continue to push the team to new heights again this fall. CAC Rookie of the Year Meredith Leson led a charge of eight Eagle runners to garner all-conference honors as Mary Washington won its seventh Capital Athletic Conference title in eight years: Julie Rakowski, Leson, Natalie Alexander, Gabrielle Santilli, Marga Fischel, Jaimie Donaruma, Teresa Joerger, and Dana Folta.

Despite the two conference titles, the Eagles will look to return even faster in 1999, with another appearance in the NCAA Championship as their top goal, With the large cast returning and several impact newcomers, MWC could very well sport one of the top teams in the South region.
