UMW Volleyball Tops Springfield, 3-1, in NCAA 2nd Round for Win #30

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Springfield College, 3-1, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Huntingdon, Pa. on Friday evening, in one of the wildest matches of the year. The Eagles improve to 30-4 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles led from the outset, but Springfield rallied late, and eventually came away with a 28-26 win. Conversely, Springfield jumped way ahead in the second, leading 20-14, but it was UMW's turn to put together a big rally, and the Eagles ended up with a 29-27 victory to even the score at 1-1.

Continuing with the unexpected, the Eagles started the third with a 7-0 run, led by five aces (and four consecutively) from junior Hannah Livermon. UMW went on to roll for a 25-6 win in the third, and broke open a tight game late in the fourth for a 25-15 win, and the match.

Senior hitter Jordan Lyons led the Eagles with 16 kills and 21 digs, while senior Bryanna Miller added nine kills. Junior Chloe Crosen scored eight kills against one error, and senior Caitlyn Burch added five kills against one error.

Junior Lauren Foley provided 20 assists, while classmate Brenna Campbell posted 16 assists and 10 digs. Livermon had 18 digs to go with her career-high six aces, while senior Emma Hadley had seven totals blocks, and Burch six.

The Eagles will advance to third round action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., at Juniata College. With the win today, the Eagles surpass the 30-win mark for the fifth time in program history.
